Paremiology – Proverbs: Pedagogy, Psychology, Propaganda

Paremiology (the study of proverbs) and paremiography (the collection of proverbs) have produced extensive and fascinating scholarship of vital importance to the translator and interpreter. This presentation discusses the uses of proverbs for pedagogical and formative purposes (as a means of molding conduct and as part of child rearing), in journalism, advertising (very important to the translator) and propaganda, in psychological mental and attitude testing, and in language acquisition, with an emphasis on the training and testing of translators and interpreters (including cultural considerations and the translator/interpreter as an expert witness).
